Signs of a Bad HVAC Company

choosing a good hvac contractor

Choosing the right company to install your residential or commercial air conditioner is a decision you shouldn’t take lightly. If you hire the right contractor, you can avoid issues such as overpricing, incorrect installation or sizing, knockoff parts and premature replacement.

Avoiding the wrong HVAC companies is just as important as finding the right one to hire. But how can you tell the difference? Here are some red flags to watch out for:

They’ll give a quote over the phone. It’s not unusual for an HVAC contractor to give you a ballpark estimate while you’re speaking on the phone, especially if you’re persistent. However, a reputable HVAC contractor will keep reminding you that they have to inspect your HVAC equipment to determine if it needs to be repaired or maintained. They’ll also give you a written estimate. If they insist on a fixed price over the phone and won’t give you anything in writing, this a sign of a bad HVAC company.

They can’t answer your questions. Professionals will explain what’s wrong with your equipment if you need an HVAC repair. They’ll also answer your questions and give you options whenever possible. They’re interested in providing great service because they want their customers to be satisfied and happy and tell their friends and neighbors about them. If a contractor or technician refuses to answer your questions, it’s likely either because they don’t know the answer or they’re hiding something, in which case you shouldn’t hire them.

The price is too high or low. If you think the estimate from one contractor is too high, get estimates from at least two others. The quotes may vary by a few dollars, but it’ll be apparent immediately if one of them is noticeably higher or lower. Overpricing is the sign of a dishonest contractor. On the other hand, don’t be swayed by someone who quotes an incredibly low price.. as they might not be as experienced or could intend to do a poor job or use knockoff parts. Get a few quotes from different contractors and stick with the ones who quote a fair and reasonable price.
